National Antenna License for AVA in Finland

Positive changes in store for MTV Media, with new licenses including for high-definition broadcasting.

On Dec. 21, 2011, the Finnish Government issued three favorable decisions for MTV Media: a new national program license for TV channel AVA, a licence for MTV3 MAX HD and approval of the change of CANAL+ Series to high-definition CANAL+ Urheilu (Sport).

MTV Media Buys Eat.fi

Finland's MTV Media to combine its Makuja recipe service with the popular restaurant site Eat.fi.

MTV Media has acquired the business operations of Eat.fi, a Finnish online service enabling users to search for restaurant services. Eat.fi currently has 50,000 visitors a week and more than 40,000 downloads of the mobile app.

New app from MTV Media gives subscribers access to the latest news and more.

Finland's MTV Media has released a free cell phone app: MTV3 Juuri nyt. The application features the latest most important and interesting news, sports content and entertainment news. Users can view news articles, videos and related picture galleries, plus listen to broadcasts from Radio Nova, Finland's biggest commercial radio station, to check out local weather forecasts.

"Our greatest online strengths are our rich and varied content," says Henrik Laine, MTV Media's business manager for online business. "We want to provide consumers with fast and easy access to our content.

Hockey World Championships 2012 with MTV Oy and Canal+

Plans are already underway for giving TV viewers more of everything for the Hockey World Championships in 2012. MTV Oy and Canal+ will be providing a range of hockey offerings.

In spring 2010, MTV Oy acquired the media rights to the hockey world championships for the 2012 to 2017 period that covers two home tournaments co-hosted with Sweden. And now the TV company has announced its plans for next year.

All games played in the tournament taking place in Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden, in May 2012 will be seen on CANAL+ , a channel administered by MTV Oy.

MTV Media Changes Tack with Jokakoti.fi

Real estate portal Jokakoti.fi is now owned by MTV Oy as well as Finland's biggest real estate companies.

When MTV Media started the real estate portal Jokakoti in Finland in 2009, the idea was to challenge the existing real estate sites - with long experience with its very successful MTV sites, this made a lot of sense for the company. But two years later, it was time to rethink things. "We were not as successful as we'd liked and we knew by 2010 that the biggest real estate brokers wanted to establish their own portal," says Heikki Rotko, Executive Vice President at MTV.

Finland's AVA Now on Free TV

Finland's AVA, the TV channel for women aged 24-54, is now on free cable TV.

In mid-January, MTV Media's channel for women, AVA, was launched as a free channel on cable TV in Finland, reaching some 50 percent of the country.

"We originally started AVA as part of our MTV3 mini pay package," says Jorma Sairanen, senior vice president for programming at MTV Media.

MTV3.fi Relaunches Front Page

After a year of discussion and planning, MTV3.fi has a new front page. MTV3’s Petteri Ruotsalainen explains why.

MTV3.fi has gotten a new face. "After years of compromises and 'quick fixes' to sudden needs from different departments in the entire MTV Media company, we launched a new front page on August 16," says Petteri Ruotsalainen, managing editor for online content at MTV Media, the company behind Finland's largest commercial TV station, MTV3. "The goal was to find an answer to problems that plague the old front page.

MTV3 in Finland top in viewers

Finnish TV channel MTV3 retook the No. 1 spot in 2009.

Finnish TV channels attracted record numbers of viewers in 2009, with MTV MEDIA's free-TV channel MTV3 leading the pack with 23 percent of all viewers according to Finnish audience measurement company Finnpanel. Coming in at No. 5 was MTV MEDIA's Sub, with 7 percent of the total viewers. MTV3 retook the No. 1 viewership spot that it had held in 2007. In 2008, MTV3 was No. 2 after state-owned YLE TV1.
