Meet Hanna Kallankari

Switching from acquiring TV programs to selling book rights was an easy change, says Hanna Kallankari.

Hanna Kallankari, 30, comes from Keminmaa in northern Finland, but she's been living in Helsinki since she was 15. In 2003, she started working as a trainee at MTV Media, and by 2008 she had worked her way up to the position of Acquisitions Executive, acquiring TV programs for various MTV channels. In February, she traveled across the Baltic to Stockholm as a GROW participant to work for Bonnier Group Agency (BGA) with a very different product: books.

Meet Jaclyn Rymuza

Magazine designer from Florida appreciates eco-friendly Stockholm.

When Jaclyn Rymuza decided to make a temporary switch from designing magazines to designing books, she was motivated by a number of factors. "I applied to the GROW program because I knew this would be a fantastic opportunity to experience new design ideas and to experience new challenges and also a whole new culture," she says.  "Overall, I wanted to be inspired!"

Long Live E-Mail Marketing

Is e-mail marketing a must for magazines? Bonnier's Heather Vessey and Steffen Trannerup give some dos and don'ts on what has become an integral part of the publishing industry.

While some experts have predicted the death of e-mail due to the popularity of social media, e-mail isn't going away any time soon. Social media may provide new and faster ways of communicating, but e-mail provides a pace and style that is more intimate and thoughtful, giving it an importance that other media may not have.

Breaking Boundaries Generates Business Ideas

What happens when sales, marketing, editorial, circulation and online staff get together to brainstorm ideas at Bonnier Corporation? BMU's Elisabeth Palombo talks about recent workshops in the U.S.

When Elisabeth Palombo arrived at Bonnier Corporation in Florida, there was no question about what she could do. Palombo, who works for Bonnier Media University in Stockholm (BMU) at Bonnier AB, was on an extended visit to Bonnier Corporation to investigate how BMU could operate in the U.S. market. After talking with Bonnier Corporation CEO Terry Snow, it was obvious that her experience could immediately be put to use.

Meet Jutta Pasanen

Interactive media producer from MTV Media gets a taste of online producing at Saveur and Parenting.

"I have always dreamed of working abroad and this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I had to catch," says Jutta Pasanen. Catch it she did, moving from Helsinki to New York City as a GROW participant. At MTV Media in Finland, Pasanen had a broad range of responsibilities. "My title is iProducer and I take care of interactive functions, such as voting and viewer games, in MTV3's prime time TV shows. I also deal with mobile charity lottery and fundraising in charity concerts and TV shows that are presented on the channel.

Spring Has Sprung

Meet Lena Thunell

Bonnier Carlsen designer learns to work the opposite way on the other side of the earth.

Lena Thunell is a graphic designer at Bonnier Carlsen, where she came after starting out in the travel industry. At Weldon Owen in Sydney, Australia, as a GROW participant she is now working on a project that the publisher is putting out together with Discovery Education: the design of 64 titles, each with 32 pages and written for 10-13 year olds.

Meet William Mack

A senior designer trades books in San Francisco for books in London.

William Mack did not start out as a designer. He studied creative writing at university, but when he finished school he ended up working with book covers in New York and eventually he ended up as a senior designer at Weldon Owen in San Francisco. On Feb. 1, he made a temporary switch as a GROW participant, moving from San Francisco to work at Templar Publishing in Dorking in the English countryside, some 50 minutes outside London.
