Megan Miller on Tablets

Bonnier R&D's Megan Miller speaks at AppWorks in Oslo.

At the recent AppWorks conference in Oslo - the largest conference in Scandinavia on mobile applications - the two hottest topics were location services and tablets. So says Bonnier R&D's Megan Miller, who spoke on a panel with representatives from Adobe and Katachi, a soon-to-be-launched tablet magazine.

"We talked about what defines a magazine experience, and whether it's possible to move the experience to a tablet while creating something entirely new," says Miller. "Does this mean print magazines are going to go away? Not anytime soon.

Bonnier's Björn Jeffery looks at big changes that are transforming the media industry.

How is "playfulness" changing the media landscape? More than you think, says Björn Jeffery of Bonnier R&D and Bonnier Digital, who defines playfulness as integrating game mechanics into everyday life, for example collecting points for specific actions, such as driving a car more environmentally, to compete with yourself or others.

Investment Company Targets Entrepreneurs

Smaller companies and startups get a lift from B. Media Invest, Bonnier's investment company targeting interesting media ideas.

B. Media Invest AB - BMI - is a Bonnier subsidiary founded in 2009 to fill a gap in the company. "While Bonnier has worked with Swedish media investment management company Aggregate to identify companies of interest that are not competitors, there was a need to look at smaller companies within media to invest in," says Pontus Schultz, head of business development at Bonnier R&D.

Bonnier Hack Day Ends With A Bang

Eleven promising business ideas emerge from Bonnier Hack Day, with one clear winner.

After 24 hours of solid creativity, Bonnier Hack Day ended with a round of three-minute pitches from the 11 teams that made it through the night, still fired up despite the long hours of work.

A team from Sydsvenskan won the day, with their "Citypedia" concept, which combined data on any city from gowalla/4sq, Twitter and Google along with users' own ratings to create a city wiki with an app for iPhone and advertising. Team members included Per-Olof Bondesson, Johannes Fosseus and Sara Johannesson.

Bonnier R&D Organizes Hack Day

Bonnier R&D's upcoming Hack Day is not your usual conference.

Call it an unconference. That's how Paulina Modlitba Söderlund of Bonnier R&D describes the upcoming March 11-12 Hack Day, an event that aims to develop new business ideas. "Instead of the usual set of speeches and presentations, the Hack Day is more about getting interesting people together and inspiring them to create something new and make the event exciting and worthwhile," she says. In this case, the Hack Day will be for 30-40 participants working in 10-15 teams.
