Life At Bonnier - Tammi

Meet Kerstin Schöfisch

Licorice, a chance meeting and new ways of working are three things GROW participant Kerstin Schöfisch will remember when she finishes a three-month stint in Helsinki.

What do flags and licorice have in common? They are both prominent in Helsinki, Finland, says GROW participant Kerstin Schöfisch.  "It looks like the Finns hang out their national flags in the streets every second day and I was always wondering what they were celebrating," she says. "Even my colleagues could not tell me. And the Finns seem to be crazy about licorice, as there is licorice ice cream, yoghurt, donuts, coffee, etc.

Meet Elona Zejnati

The everyday pace of life is not as rushed and hectic in Finland compared to New York, says GROW participant Elona Zejnati.

A language translation app for a phone can go a long way, says Elona Zejnati, especially when you are 4,100 miles from home and trying to navigate your way through the food aisles at a grocery store. Zejnati, 28, uprooted her life in New York and moved to Helsinki, Finland, for three months trading magazines for books.

Tammi's Manga Titles Win DesuTalks Prizes

Tammi, the publisher that brought manga to Finland, takes home all the manga prizes at DesuTalks.

At the recent DesuTalks conference on Japanese culture in Helsinki, two manga titles from Tammi Publishers won awards. The Best Manga Release 2010 award was given to Yotsuba&! and the Best New Manga 2010 title was given to Hopeanuoli (Ginga Nagareboshi Gin in Japanese).

Peter Franzén: Actor to Author

One of Finland's most famous actors tours with his first novel, published by Tammi.

Finnish book publisher Tammi has scored a coup with a different kind of novelist: Peter Franzén, one of the most popular actors in Finland. Franzén is currently making headlines as the main character in Finland's big-budget crime film Harjunpää and the Priest of Evil.

Vampires on the Loose

The current book craze for the undead shows no sign of dying.

Consumers are sucking it up in record numbers. Vampire romance that is, a global phenomenon that doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon. From Stephenie Meyer's global hit series Twilight - both in its book and movie incarnations - to TV series such as First Blood, a love for all things vampire has been a big hit for publishers and producers.

Tuija Kuusela: Princesses and princess cakes

Tuija from Finland looks forward to next year's wedding boom in Sweden – while working on Bonnier Fakta's wedding calendar.

The content of the work at Bonnierförlagen has been quite familiar to me, because it's very similar to the work I'm used to do at Tammi Publishers. From the very beginning I've been entrusted challenging and diverse tasks: cover designs for both fiction and non-fiction books, typografical inner layouts for non-fiction titles and even some illustrations (an area I almost had forgot in Finland because of the lack of time).
