2.3 million readers, Vi i Villa is Sweden's biggest circulation magazine. It reaches all homeowners in Sweden and is financed completely by advertising.

Vi i Villa has been published since 1956, but has been owned by Bonnier only since 1998. Since the acquisition, sales have gone up from SEK 50 million in Sweden to SEK 300 million in the whole Nordic region. The magazine doesn't have subscribers in the usual sense of the word - Sweden's over 2 million homeowners get the magazine free at home in the mail ten times per year.

"One of the keys to our success is the possibility to advertise locally," says Christian Rudén, CEO.

Meet Amy Mangino

For GROW participant Amy Mangino, different countries means different magazine models.

Handling magazine advertisements or subscriptions differ depending on which side of the Atlantic you work. So says GROW participant and New Yorker Amy Mangino, who is on a three-month work exchange in Stockholm.  "I thought it would be a great opportunity to live abroad and learn how magazine publishing works in another country," says Mangino, 34, who has worked as a marketing director at Bonnier Corporation's Saveur for the past two years. "I create the media kit, general presentation, and category presentations," she says.

Meet Brian Glaser

GROW participant navigates Copenhagen's streets and Bonnier Publications brands.

More than anything else, Brian Glaser notices unique cultural differences between his hometown of Brooklyn, New York and Copenhagen, Denmark. Glaser, 26, is in Denmark for three months on an exchange as part of the GROW program. "The biggest difference is that Danes rely on their bicycles in the same way Americans rely on their cars." says Glaser.  "My favorite memories have been of me riding my bike through narrow alleyways and getting lost among neighborhoods that have been here for hundreds of years.

Meet David Andersson

GROW participant David Andersson finds out how it is to work - and eat - in New York City.

The most surprising thing about moving from Stockholm and the online book retailer Adlibris to Bonnier Corporation in New York is how much things are the same. "My work is so like what I do at home," says GROW participant David Andersson.

ToppHälsa magazine succeeds in downturn

A 10 percent increase in ad sales in 2009 for Swedish magazine ToppHälsa is due to a smart mix of health, training and personal development.

Bonnier Tidskrifter magazine ToppHälsa will celebrate its fifth year of publication with an anniversary issue, No. 5, later this year. Editorial staff are working now with issue No. 4 which goes to press in a few days. The theme is strength. Managing editor Frida Boisen proudly explains that ToppHälsa is the only magazine in the health segment that has raised its readership numbers – while other health magazines have lost readers.

"We actually managed to raise ad sales by 10 percent.
