The Heat Is On

Patricia Schmid explores life in Florida, weathering tornadoes and hiding from the humidity.

I used my first days at Bonnier Corporation to take a closer look at all the different software tools. It also took me a while to get accustomed to the air conditioning system—I always have a scarf with me, I get easily cold sometimes. Last week we also had a lot of heavy rainfalls (over 20 inches) and a warning for tornados. Nevertheless, I was able to explore the city of Winter Park.  There is even a small beach at a lake a 15-minute walk away, but I am still not sure whether I will go for a swim or not. You will probably understand, when you have read the sign in this photo...

The department, in which I work calls itself the Interactive Audience team. The task of this department is to support online managers and editors with all online activities. The team is arranged into the following tasks:  subscription, e-mail, analytics, ads and audience development. I work in the audience development team, which develops proposals for the online manager to raise traffic for the different Web sites. The interactive team grew rapidly: three years ago, only few people worked in this field, now there are over 20 colleagues in this department.

Bonnier Corporation has more than 40 special-interest magazines and the same amount of Web sites—and it is still growing. There is a broad selection of special interest content starting with outdoor magazinez to special sports magazines like Ride BMX. And then there are lifestyle and travel magazines, like Islands, with beautiful pictures of travel destinations. It is one of the largest consumer-publishing groups in America. Field & Stream, an outdoor magazine for hunting and fishing, just won the General Excellence award at the National Magazine Awards. Saveur, a wonderful magazine for cuisine, won in the Single-Topic Issue category for their breakfast-issue.

Trying out new food and seeing how the eating habits are different is something I really love. Last Friday, we had a goodbye party for a colleague and the cake was something. It was really delicious but also overloaded with a lot of creamy decoration—unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. At lunchtime we do basically the same what we do at arsEdition: everybody brings a lunch packet and then we gather around our meeting-table—we always have a lot of fun. Even the lunch everybody brings is very similar to what we eat at home: a lot of healthy stuff, vegetables and fruits.  The "healthy-stay slim-organic" movement is really a global thing. The only difference is that at arsEdition we long to use our terrace in summertime. ArsEdition is located in a beautiful art nouveau house in the center of Munich and we are very lucky to have our own terrace. In Florida, everybody is happy to not have to go outside with all the heat and humidity during lunchtime.
