Craig Kotilinek has traded the sun and palm trees of Winter Park, Florida for the historic Estonian capitol of Tallinn. In Florida he worked as new media editor for the Travel Group at Bonnier Corporation but his recent move as a GROW participant means he'll be spending three months focusing on new areas: "My GROW job is a photographer and video producer for Äripäev, a business daily in Tallinn," he says.
Kotilinek, 28, has been less than a month at the job but he's already learned plenty to take home with him. "With all the bells and whistles of new media it's easy to lose sight of the single most important element in a narrative: The story," he says. "My colleagues in the photo department are masters of this, so it's been great to learn from them."
Kotilinek is also impressed with Estonian culture and the people he's met so far. "Estonians are an incredibly resilient and adaptive people who have been an absolute privilege to get acquainted with," he says.
And Kotilinek highly recommends the experience. "Find someone to watch your dog, and do it," he says. "The hardest part for people seems to be applying. Take the first step and see where it leads you. Then, keep an open mind and be willing to let another culture influence you."
