When Tiki Murray decided to apply for the GROW program - moving to California for three months from Helsinki - she was worried that it might be difficult without a driver's license. But she didn't let that stop her. "I knew California would not have a good public transportation system," she says. "But I believed that eventually things would work out and so they did!"
Equipped with an electric bicycle and plenty of offers to drive her when she needed it, Murray has settled into the action-sport life at TransWorld Media, which is a big change from Bonnier Publications Oy, even if both companies publish magazines. "The office in California is more casual, people wear shorts and flip flops to work," she says. "Some of the guys have started 'Formal Fridays,' when they dress up in suits. I think they have been watching Mad Men. When you are used to seeing someone wearing shorts and flip flops suddenly in a suit and tie, well, that's priceless."
Despite the casual attitude, there's plenty of work to do. "At Transworld I assist the production managers, processing ads and editorial page files for Ride BMX, TransWorld Skateboarding and TransWorld SURF," says Murray. "I map the issues, compile the book and send the files to print. I also worked at the annual Transworld Skateboarding Awards, setting up the venue and working at admissions."
Murray likes that she's working with three other production managers - in Finland, she is the only one doing the work she does. And that's not the only thing she appreciates with the change. "One of my favorite things is meeting new, fun people and having a change of scenery," she says. "Southern California is so beautiful and the Pacific Ocean is amazing. And I love learning to surf!"
