I have been fortunate to be able to come to work in Bonnier Corporation at Winter Park. This has been a great chance for me to learn new things and experience a different working culture. Thanks to Bonnier who made it possible for me this time. 20 years ago, Rotary Club made it possible for me to spend a year in high school at Pecatonica, Illinois and get a glimpse of American teenagers' lives. That was a lifetime experience as well. Now I see some things differently and of course some things have changed, like it should be, but still a lot is the same; for example, how people react towards foreigners.
I visited my old host family in Pecatonica on 4th of July weekend. It was 10 years ago when I last saw the mother and her sister and their mother back in Finland on their Scandinavian tour. They have roots in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and now a friend from Finland. The house and surroundings all looked the same but they had already 10 grandchildren and one on her/his way. We spent most of time by the pool. Their son and daughters came to visit with their families and I was glad to see the old and new faces. One of the granddaughters had said before my arrival that she doesn't understand what's the all fuss about, 'cause she doesn't even know me. Still, all the kids were great and easy to talk to. Now she can also say she knows me.
This week is my last whole week and I have been starting already to think about going home and what I am taking back with me. One thing I'd for sure liked to bring with me is this supportive and positive culture that you can see both at work and off. The culture builds up good self esteem which reflects positively on communication skills and attitudes towards different people and ideas. Service culture is another thing. I'll miss the good service at restaurants even though at some points they were too efficient and quick for my standards. Of course, I'd like to bring the Florida sun with me as well, so that my holiday in August would continue to be sunny and warm. And lightning bugs from Illinois to bring some magic to the autumn nights.
Thanks for everyone! It has been great summer and pleasure to meet you!

We had a great visit from Paivi here in Illinois and we were so glad that she was able to be with us a few days. We enjoyed having her as an exchange student 20 years ago and have also enjoyed the visits with her over the years. We wish her all the best and a safe trip home. I would send some lightning bugs but I don't think they would survive the trip. It is probably illegal to send bugs to another country anyway. She will have to come back to see them again. We hope to see her in Finland in 2012. Looking forward to it. Gail Peterson
