Tonight, Swedish business weekly Veckans Affärer's the 125 Most Powerful Women in Business event will be held at the Waterfront Building in Stockholm. It's one of several equality initiatives run by the magazine. Camilla Wagner, concept publisher and equality expert at Veckans Affärer, is behind the initiatives.
"The 125 Most Powerful Women in Business is a good start," says Wagner. "But we also arrange several networking events, discussion groups, mentor programs, etc. And we've imported from the U.S. Working Mother's survey of the best workplaces for women. We honor Sweden's best workplaces in October every year.
Last week, the magazine also presented its annual Anders Index, a list of the first names of the leaders of the 255 companies listed on the Stockholm stock exchange. This year, Johan and Anders were the top names, but there are more of each of them than there are women.
"It's a humorous way to show how homogenous Swedish business is," says Wagner, explaining the thinking behind the list. "If there only eight women by 15 Johans and 13 Anders, it shows quite clearly that they're not looking for talent within the whole population."
Wagner says that although she thinks there will be a greater variety of names in the future, but unfortunately not so many more women. "I won't be happy until we've reached a level where we no longer have to think about gender, but as along is it looks like it does now, I'll continue to look at the numbers."
The event will be broadcast live starting at 7 p.m. here.
