Fire Upon the Deep Web

R&D's Erich Hugo on the question of your online reputation

For my first blog entry I was asked to say a few words about myself, and right now I am stumped. So instead of me preaching about myself, I recommend that you guys do a search on my name and I will try and track you. I will post the results of anybody searching on my name (which I can find) here on the blog. That way you will get an overview of who I am and we get my first blog post done. And it is about the DEEP WEB.

One of my favorite authors is a guy called Vernor Vinge and he wrote a book called Fire Upon the Deep. In this book, Vinge describes space as zones of thought. I reckon this is the same as to what is happening with the World Wide Web, which Google is but skimming the surface of. Lately, there has been a plethora of new Deep Web search engines which trawl the depths for info about any topics.

Like the "zones of thought" in Vinge's Fire Upon the Deep, there are monsters in the dark. But it does seem that people have become quite immune to these as it has become an out of sight, out of mind behavior. But then you have to ask yourself about your online PR rating. Is it something that you would like to control or at least try to? This leads to the whole debate about transparency. The web adage goes, if it can become digital, it will; I think we need to add to that adage and say, if people can know something about you, they will. You can try for a while to buck the trend by managing your online reputation or you can set it free. Like Clarence Worly says in True Romance, you can just throw caution to the wind and let the chips fall where they may.

P.S. I will in the next couple of days see if I can track your searches and post the result here in on this blog. Make it so!
