Hot and Not-so-Hot

The importance of re-engineered browsers, and why freedom of speech is in danger

What’s Hot

In times when cloud computing is coming on strong, re-engineered browsers play an important role on the web. According to Wired, two winning browsers are Mozilla’s Firefox 3 and Google Chrome. Although Firefox 3 is still only the second-most-popular browser after Microsoft Internet Explorer, it is the feisty favorite of the web elite. In mid December, Google released an official 1.0 version of Chrome, and thus dropped the beta status after a mere 100 days. Chrome now claims over 10 million active users worldwide.

What’s Not

According to Reporters Without Borders’ Annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index for 2008, Sweden takes 7th place in the global ranking of freedom of the press - and the trend is negative. “The main reason is the increased number of threats that were directed towards journalists last year, e.g. after Nerikes Allehanda chose to publish the Muhammed drawings,” Jesper Bengtsson, Head of Reporters without Borders in Sweden, told Dagens Nyheter [In Swedish].
